"The Best Investment I Ever Made" was written by A.J Cronin. He was a physician, Scottish novelist, dramatist and non-fiction writer. He was one of the most popular storytellers in the 20th century.
This was a real story that happens in his life. Cronin was travelling on a ship. He saw one of the passengers watching him closely. Cronin was fatigued so he avoids him. The next day at forenoon the same passenger watching him, but this time the passenger wife was with him. Cronin discovered their name was Mr and Mrs John.
On the next day evening, they spoke with Cronin. This was their first visit to America. They were inviting many young people to summer camps there. Mr and Mrs John had been active for 15 years in the field of youth welfare. John was a solicitor and a director of an organisation devoted to taking care of boys and girls who had fallen under the ban of the law. Mr John spoke something in Cronin's ears. Now Cronin recognises Mr John.
At the quarter of his life century, Cronin was a young doctor. On one day November night, a sergeant knock Cronin's door, to attend a suicide case. Everyone thinks that the patient will die because the patient is in critical condition. After a few hours, the patient opens his eyes. He told them his name was John, he was an orphan. He has an uncle but he didn't do his responsibility. His uncle gets him, clerk position in the London Solicitor office. At there he made bad companions and bet on horses. So that he lost all his small savings. To earn all his earnings back he theft a sum of money from the office and bet on horses, but this idea was failed. So he shut himself in his room and turned on the gas.
On hearing this Cronin, Sergeant, the landlady came forward to help him. The sergeant does not make the report upon this case. The landlady offers John a month's freeboard until he got up on his feet again. Cronin gave seven pounds and ten shillings to put back the money in the office.
At last, John said to Cronin this incident made him help boys and girls. Cronin was happy to see. He felt happy that this one good investment in his life was helping many others person life.
